Anonymous asked: What's the premise or basic idea of Awkward Shelby? Why did you start it?
Awkward Shelby was formed in June of 2012 as sort of a “summer project.” I was staying at my aunt’s in San Francisco and had just graduated, so I needed something to fulfill my time. Something that was easy to do and didn’t involve tons of tools. I used easy tools I could get to like paper, pens, highlighters, and a scanner. I didn’t just wake up one day and say, “Oh, I’ll make a webcomic!” No, I had just drawn a basic character that represented myself and then it grew from there. I started drawing myself in funny situations and was like, wow I can put these on the internet.
Onto the basic idea… It’s just a basic strip comic. No fancy story or complex plot to follow, although that might be something I can look into in the future. Shelby is sort of an autobiography of myself put into everyday life situations, mostly awkward ones (i.e. having the sudden urge to pee when in a dressing room). The “awkward” aspect of the comic is directly related to Shelby’s female gender and the fact that she is androgynous. Aside from that, it also plays up on the idea that we all face certain situations that are sort of uncomfortable or no one really talks about. The “awkward” is a very relatable awkward. Not like that Zooey Deschanel, ditzy girl crap.
Sorry this was a long answer, but I hope it answered your question.
